On 13 May 2025, the monks of Maria Toevlucht Abbey announced that, due to the limited number of monks remaining, they had submitted a request to the General Chapter for the closure of the abbey.

Maria Toevlucht Abbey Chooses Completion
The monks of Maria Toevlucht Abbey in Zundert requested permission from the General Chapter of their monastic order to close the abbey. Following the loss of three fellow monks in 2024, extensive and intensive discussions took place about the future of Trappist life in Zundert. Over time, the community concluded that, with so few monks remaining, it was no longer possible or responsible to sustain a vital and viable monastic life.
With the approval of the General Chapter in September 2025, monastic life at the abbey in Zundert came to an end. As a result, the brewery also permanently ceased brewing Zundert Trappist.
